A Pair of Federal Side Chairs, Annapolis or Baltimore, c.1795

a pair of mahogany "urn-back" side chairs; both retain their original slip seats; in an early 20th Century finish; while possibly made in Baltimore, this English inspired form was more prevalent in Annapolis as seen in the chairs of John Shaw; in fact, the splat design, poplar slip seats, two-part quarter-round glue blocks, stretcher arrangement, and chamfering of the inside corner of the legs, are all characteristics of Shaw's work (see figs. 31 and 45 in Elder and Bartlett's John Shaw, Cabinetmaker of Annapolis); repair to one stile below juncture with crest rail; dimensions: 16 7/8" tall @ front rail x 21" wide @ front rail x 38 1/4" tall @ crest rail
