An Mid-18th Century Side Chair, New Jersey, c.1750
this chair was aquired in Alloway, New Jersey and reputed to have come from a family in nearby Greenwich, Cumberland County; the finish is old and probably original; both back splats retain an early if not original pinstripe decoration; all vertical members appear to be cherry or maple; the lists, splats, and stretchers appear to be ash or hickory; the ovoid feet are old, later additions, probably applied to compensate for wear to the original cylindrical extention of the legs (corresponding wear can be seen on the underside of these original worn feet, above the additions); the true rush seat is a modern replacement; dimensions: 17 " tall @ the seat x 19 1/2" wide @ the front rail x 39 1/4" tall @ the top of finial
