An American or European School Still Life, c.1865
an unsigned oil on canvas still life of fruit and leafage on a silver salver;
this example illustrates the realism and simple subject matter made popular
by Europe's influence on America, as well as by the importance of the “Philadelphia School" of the second and
third quarter of the 19th Century; the exceptionally rendered
apricot twigs and leaves, as well as the contrasting values of the olive
background, are reminiscent of a number of contemporary examples by various
members of the Peale Family; very fine overall crackle; the painting has
been relined on new stretchers; ultraviolet reveals no visible repairs
or significant retouch; in a period gilt over composition frame; image
