Early American Furnishings

Baltimore Federal Candle Stand, c.1815

a rare formal version of a typical local form; the bold urn and baluster column turnings are seen on many pedestals produced in Baltimore; the more delicate proportions of the reeded legs with pointed “knees” and brass lion’s paw casters indicate a likely earlier date of manufacture than the heavier proportions and “spider” form legs of slightly later Federal/Empire examples; there are repairs to two of the leg joints, fortified by Mid-20th Century iron bracing underneath; the reeded top is of a particularly dense, well figured single board of Caribbean mahogany; 28 3/4″ high x 17 3/4″ wide x 25″ deep
