A Federal Mahogany Side Table, Baltimore, c.1815

a rare form, this small side table is made of a well figured solid mahogany top over white pine secondary wood; the side and back aprons are veneered in ribbon mahogany while the front apron and all leg stiles were reserved for boldly figured crotch mahogany; applied beading beneath only the front and side aprons indicate that the primary location for this piece was intended to be against a wall, while the veneered rear apron and small size indicate the intent of portability; in excellent condition, retaining most of its original glue blocks and having no repairs or veneer checks; dimensions: 28½” tall x 29½” wide x 17½” deep
